The Character of Mercy

1. Important thing of the law.

23“How terrible it will be for you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest part of your income, but you ignore the important things of the law - justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but you should not leave undone the more important things.                                                                                                           Matthew 23:23

2. The recourse even of the innocent

15Even if I were innocent, I would have no defense. I could only plead for mercy.

                                                                                                                                Job 9:7

3. Promised during the second coming

5My mercy and justice are coming soon. Your salvation is on the way. I will rule the nations. They will wait for me and long for my power. 6Look up to the skies above, and gaze down on the earth beneath. For the skies will disappear like smoke, and the earth will wear out like a piece of clothing. The people of the earth will die like flies, but my salvation lasts forever. My righteous rule will never end!                                                                      Isaiah 51:3

The Mercy of God Described

1.      Plentiful

        16Answer my prayers, O Lord,

for your unfailing love is wonderful.

Turn and take care of me,

for your mercy is so plentiful.

                                                                                                Psalm 69:16

2.      Tender

            78Because of God’s tender mercy,

the light from heaven is about to break upon us,

Luke 1:78

What the Mercy of God Accomplishes

1.      Redemption

8He said, “They are my very own people. Surely they will not be false again.” And he became their Savior. 9In all their suffering he also suffered, and he personally rescued them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them. He lifted them up and carried them through all the years.

                                                                                                                                Isaiah 63:7

Who Receives Mercy

1.      Those who are merciful

7God blesses those who are merciful,

for they will be shown mercy.

                                                                                                Matthew 5:7

2.      Those who cry for help

28“But when all was going well, your people turned to sin again, and once more you let their enemies conquer them. Yet whenever your people cried to you again for help, you listened once more from heaven. In your wonderful mercy, you rescued them repeatedly!                                                                                                                                                  Nehemiah 9:27

3.      Those who confess their sins

13People who cover over their sins will not prosper. But if they confess and forsake them, they will receive mercy.                                                                                      Proverbs 28:13

7Let the people turn from their wicked deeds. Let them banish from their minds the very thought of doing wrong! Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

                                                                                                                            Isaiah 55:7

4.      Those who love the name of the Lord

132Come and show me your mercy,

as you do for all who love your name.

                                                                                                                                Psalm 119:132

5.      Those who Fear Him

50His mercy goes on from generation to generation,

to all who fear him.

                                                                                                                                Luke 1:50
